Brendan Girschek, M.D., FRCSC.,FACS.
Dr. Brendan Girschek is a fellowship-trained retina specialist. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Girschek is a fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He completed a two-year intensive fellowship in retina surgery at the world-renowned Charles Retina Institute at the University of Tennessee in Memphis following his residency in ophthalmology at Louisiana State University.
Dr. Girschek was born in Montreal, Canada. At the time, his father, Peter, was completing his ophthalmology residency at McGill University. Shortly after, the family moved to Toronto, Canada where Brendan’s father started his practice and later joined the faculty at the University of Toronto.
As a medical student, Dr. Girschek spent time with his father and his ophthalmology colleagues at the University of Toronto. He was initially introduced to the specialty of vitreoretinal surgery by Dr. Rob Devenyi at the Toronto Western Hospital. Brendan graduated from medical school and began his ophthalmology residency at Louisiana State University (LSU Eye Center) in New Orleans in 2005. His first year of training consisted of an internal medicine preliminary year at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. It was during his following three years at LSU that Brendan’s interest with retinal diseases and surgery matured.
Immediately following his graduation from LSU in 2009, Dr. Girschek began a two-year retina surgery fellowship at the world-renowned Charles Retina Institute at the University of Tennessee in Memphis under the mentor-ship of Dr. Steve Charles, one of the most respected and innovative retinal surgeons in the world. Dr. Charles is personally responsible for many of the surgical techniques and innovations that retina surgeons across the world use in retinal surgery on a daily basis.
Dr. Girschek was recruited to join the Cedar Valley Eye Care team following his graduation from fellowship. The opportunity to serve the Cedar Valley as the only full-time retina specialist was a chance of a lifetime. It is in Waterloo, Iowa that patients can be diagnosed and treated with cutting-edge techniques without having to leave their community.
Dr. Girschek has been married to his wife, Janice, since 2005. They met in college where Janice was studying fine art, ultimately graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Drawing and Painting (B.F.A.) from the Ontario College of Art & Design. She also graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Dr. Girschek and Janice have two children, a daughter named Taylor (5 years old) and a son named Hudson (3 years old). Dr. Girschek and his family live in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
